Meta Ads Learning Phase: What It Is and What Not to Touch

The learning phase is the period when Meta is still working out who to show your ads to. Meta says an ad set generally needs about 50 results within 7 days of its last significant edit to leave it. Results jump around until then. Big changes restart it, so leave your ads alone while they learn.

In short

  • The learning phase is Meta's testing period for a new or significantly changed ad set.

  • Meta says it needs about 50 optimisation events within 7 days to finish.

  • Changing the optimisation event, the bid strategy, the budget by a large amount, or adding new ads can restart it.

  • "Learning limited" means the ad set can't get enough results to finish learning.

  • The fix is usually fewer ad sets with more budget each, not more tweaking.

What is the learning phase?

It's the testing period after you launch an ad set or change it significantly. Meta tries different people and placements to find who acts on your ad.

An optimisation event is the action you've told Meta to find, such as a purchase or a lead. During learning, Meta hasn't seen enough of them to be confident. Costs are often higher and results less steady. Ads Manager shows "Learning" in the delivery column while this is happening.

How long does it last?

Until the ad set gets about 50 optimisation events within 7 days of its last significant edit. That's Meta's own guidance.

For a well-funded ad set, that can take a few days. For one on a small budget, it can take weeks, or never happen.

You can work out what it takes. Multiply your expected cost per result by 50, then divide by 7. If a lead costs £20, that's £1,000 a week, or about £143 a day, to finish learning in one week.

What restarts it?

Any edit Meta treats as significant. The common ones:

  • Changing the optimisation event, such as from leads to purchases

  • Changing the bid strategy

  • A large budget change. About 20% or more is the level most often cited

  • Adding new ads to the ad set

  • Pausing the ad set for 7 days or more, then restarting it

None of these is forbidden. Just do them on purpose, together, rather than one at a time every day.

What does "learning limited" mean?

It means the ad set can't get enough results to finish learning. Meta shows it as Learning limited in Ads Manager.

The four usual causes are a small audience, a low budget, a low bid, and too many ads or ad sets running at once. Each one spreads your results too thin. The usual fix is to combine ad sets, so one ad set with a bigger budget collects results faster than three small ones.

What should I do while it runs?

Check that tracking works, then wait. Fix anything broken, but leave everything else for at least 7 days.

  1. Confirm that results are being recorded in Events Manager.

  2. Check the landing page loads quickly and the form works.

  3. Note your starting numbers.

  4. Leave audience, budget and creative alone for 7 days.

  5. Then make any changes together, in one go.

From the accounts I run, I judge an ad set on at least 7 days of data and group my changes together, rather than making a small edit every day. Daily AI checks flag anything that's actually broken in the meantime.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the Meta learning phase last?

Until the ad set gets about 50 optimisation events within 7 days of its last significant edit, according to Meta. There's no fixed number of days. A well-funded ad set can finish in a few days. One on a small budget may take weeks or stay in learning limited.

Does changing the budget reset the learning phase?

A large change can. Increases or cuts of about 20% or more are the level most often cited as restarting learning. Smaller, gradual changes are less likely to. If you need a big change, make it once and then leave the ad set alone for a week.

Does adding a new ad reset the learning phase?

It can, because Meta treats adding ads to an ad set as a significant edit. If you want to test new ads without disturbing one that's working, add them in a separate ad set or campaign, or add several at once rather than one each day.

How do I get out of learning limited?

Give the ad set more chance to get results. Combine small ad sets into fewer, larger ones. Raise the budget, or optimise for an event that happens more often. Use a broader audience. Then wait 7 days before judging the change.
